A city or an urban environment which is not safe, accessible and inclusive prevents a significant percentage of its population from productively participating in various activities denying them the opportunities and a decent quality of life. This further leads to segregation, stigmatization and denial of the ‘Right to the City’. Good Public Spaces promote inclusion, enhance sense of safety, support local economies, attract investments, and improve urban mobility, environment and public health. The United Nations in India partners with the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) to strengthen Government’s commitment to disability inclusion by developing knowledge products for building capacities of state-level functionaries, particularly under the ongoing Smart Cities Mission. This will ensure effective implementation of UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the domestic Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 in line with Sustainable Development Goals. To address this, NIUA has joined hands with its strategic partner Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT-KGP) to integrate the principles of safety, accessibility & inclusivity into planning of public places through this course. This self-paced online course will take you across the various dimensions and strategies for building inclusive public spaces in an interactive, accessible and comprehensible format.
