Integrated Wastewater and Septage Management IWSM - Design (Part 1)

The Government of India has prioritized sanitation through the launch of the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM). SBM-U 2.0 goes beyond eliminating open defecation in cities, focusing on planning city-level sanitation systems through integrated wastewater and septage management, targeted at recycling and reuse. Additionally, the recently launched Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT 2.0) emphasizes creating a circular water economy by ensuring the treatment and reuse of wastewater and faecal sludge. This module equips participants with a comprehensive understanding of designing wastewater and septage management solutions to address the priorities outlined under these national missions. Target Audience The course is designed for decision-makers, technical experts, and planning officials from central, state, and local governments, as well as other autonomous or parastatal agencies involved in urban sanitation. Learning Objectives Understand the priorities under various national urban missions for wastewater and septage management to address aspects of the circular economy. Gain in-depth knowledge of sanitation systems and understand the concepts and principles of citywide inclusive sanitation (CWIS). Acquire practical experience in designing wastewater and septage treatment solutions. Learn to leverage various financing mechanisms and understand contractual frameworks at the city level. Understand key aspects of Integrated Wastewater and Septage Management (IWSM), including O&M and sustainability, occupational safety, public awareness, and community engagement. Course Structure The course is divided into two parts, covering various aspects such as sustainable sanitation, national missions and programs, technical design, baseline surveys and assessments, collection and transportation systems, wastewater treatment mechanisms, project management, and sustainability. Part 1: Divided into 5 sessions. Part 2: Divided into 4 sessions. Participants can proceed to the second part of the module only after completing the first part. To complete the entire course, both parts must be completed. Certification Participants who complete all sessions and activities in both parts of the course and achieve a minimum of 60% marks in the assessments at the end of each part will be eligible for certification.
