CRCs as Engines of Community Empowerment and Urban Inclusion

In many informal settlements, families face several daily barriers such as lack of nearby health facilities, difficulty accessing schools, limited job opportunities, and complicated paperwork required for government schemes. The Community Resource Centre (CRC) addresses these challenges by becoming the heart of the settlement. It functions as a friendly, walk-in centre run by local women leaders who understand the community deeply. At a CRC, a family can: get basic health care, referrals and follow-ups, receive support for school admissions, scholarships and tutoring, join skill training or start a micro-business, get help with documents and entitlements like Aadhaar, pensions, insurance, etc., and participate in local planning to improve roads, drainage, lighting and safety. It is a proven, low-cost, scalable model that has already improved the lives of 27,000+ households in Ahmedabad. The CRC works because it is owned, led and sustained by the community itself, making it a powerful example of inclusive, people-driven urban development.
